Malachi Brown (he/him) is a versatile cellist and composer from Norfolk, Virginia, where his musical journey began. He honed his craft in music composition and cello performance at Old Dominion University and Ithaca College. A fervent advocate for interdisciplinary collaboration, Malachi embraces projects where he can imprint his unique artistic voice. His works graced the concert stage, animated features, and films, unified by a distinct neo-romantic sensibility. As he puts it, “My goal is to write exactly what I hear in my head, and it’s quite a journey every time.”
As a performer, 2023 marked a milestone year: he shared stages with Toshi Reagon, Sigur Rós, and Ellie Goulding, and made his Lincoln Center debut in The Parable of the Sower. His performances with the Wordless Music Orchestra and Mac-Haydn Theatre highlight his versatility across genres. As a member of the Dream Quartet, he combines technical mastery with an expressive, genre-fluid approach to performance.
Since 2020, his compositional work for film has garnered recognition, including scores for And Don’t Forget I Love You—an award-winning documentary—and The Candy Lady, which premiered internationally this year. Malachi currently resides in New York City, where he continues to expand his multifaceted artistic career.

2023 was a landmark year for Malachi's performance career. He shared stages with luminaries such as Toshi Reagon, Sigur Rós, and Ellie Goulding, and lent his talents to musical activist organizations like Sound-Off: Music for Bail and Protestra. A significant highlight was his Lincoln Center debut, performing alongside Toshi Reagon in the acclaimed rock-opera, The Parable of the Sower, at the culmination of its national tour. His diverse engagements also included a production of The Sound of Music with the Mac-Haydn Theatre upstate, an East Coast tour with the Wordless Music Orchestra accompanying Sigur Rós, and two evenings with the same orchestra supporting Ellie Goulding at Brooklyn's Kings Theatre. Malachi is a consistent collaborator and recording artist, currently serving as a member and resident composer for the Dream Quartet. His passion extends beyond classical music; he thrives on exploring multiple genres, collaborating with dancers and singers, and even innovatively combines singing with his cello performance.
Since 2020, Malachi's compositional work for film has garnered significant recognition. He has scored five films, with And Don’t Forget I Love You earning multiple accolades, including Official Selections at the Oxford Film Festival and Indie Memphis Film Festival, and the Programmer’s Selection at the Huntington Beach Cultural Cinema Showcase (where it received a signed certificate of Top Choice Documentary Short by the Mayor of Huntington Beach). His recent work on the animation The Candy Lady has already been accepted into five film festivals, marking its international debut in March of this year. Beyond his musical pursuits, Malachi is an active presence in theatre and film acting, having toured New York City and Chicago in a Berthold Brecht play in 2022. He has also begun to explore scriptwriting, channeling his inherent storytelling abilities into the world of filmmaking.
