As a commentary on the current era of love and dating, Neo-Romance (originally for clarinet and string trio) explores the tumultuous, twisting nature of love in the contemporary view. Paying homage to the Romantic Era's soundscape and form, Neo-Romance likens itself to fluid Brahmsian melodies while incorporating individual parts that create a contemporary soundscape similar to Walton's. This performance was for the Talent Unlimited High School Annual Gala in May 2023. The performers are as follows:
Jay Julio, violin
Yoonjung Hwang, violin
Kayla Williams, viola
Malachi Brown, cello
Statements is a musical journal that captures pivotal moments in my life and the world around me. This specific journal entry reflects on faith, identity, and community during a time of national change in 2016, weaving themes of Lift Every Voice and Sing into a personal narrative. Performed by the American Composer's Orchestra in 2024.
The last of my Prelude Cycle for Piano, Prelude of a Missing Figure explores my sibling and I's feelings towards our relationship with our father. Rooted in the romantic idiom with echoes of jazz from the beginning and spread throughout, this piece recalls memories and releases different feelings. Performed by JoonSang Ko in 2019.
RNB SOLO #1 for Beatbox flute
RnB SOLO #1 for Beat-box Flute is a piece built upon the innovation of beat-boxing while playing the flute. Written specifically for the performer, Claire "Parky" Park, this piece caters to her vast range of abilities while blending the essence of RnB and Hip Hop into a single instrument, while the player accompanies themselves rhythmically. Performed by Claire "Parky" Park on beat-boxing flute in 2021.
Derived from an exercise with my composition teacher, with the primary musical theme inspired by a red balloon I saw stuck in a tree before flying away, Rondo for Violin and Piano is my first showpiece. It captures a sound reminiscent of a well rounded classic film from the 1950's. Performed by Ryan Tolentino on violin and Liza Armistead on piano in 2016.
